Some of the Likely Impact of Kaiduan Dam

According to what has been proposed, the dam will flood an area of 12 sq km, causing the evacuation and forced relocation of 2,000 people from their ancestral lands. Land that include a government primary school, 3 kindergardens, churches, graves, tamus, houses, fruit and veggie gardens, jambatan, paddy fields..

To build the dam, the biomass from the 12 sq km impounded area will be burnt- right at the back of Donggongon town.

To build the dam, there will be a massive influx of foreign workers who will be wandering and living in Penampang for YEARS.

The dam is a rock-filled dam. There is no information about where they will source these materials. A quarry will probably be needed.

The dam will be connected by TUNNEL to channel all of that water to a Water Treatment Plant proposed in Kampung Maang. If you imagine the size of KLCC - well, triple that size, and it will be located on the hill of Kampung Maang. The TUNNEL runs through the territories of an additional 8 indigenous communities, from Timpangoh, Sugud, Limbanak and so on until you get to Maang. From Maang, the water will travel by TUNNEL to Lok Kawi where it will then be channelled by pipe to houses in Penampang, KK, Luyang, etc.
Basically, all of Penampang will be a huge construction site for the next 10-15 years or more.

Resettlement of those whose land has been taken has not been looked into. Don't know where the location will be. The potential of unemployment, inability to adapt to new surrounding, poverty of those so used to rely on nature for their needs, broken families, lost tradition (e.g. tagal system), etc. etc.

There are so many consequences. The community was never consulted and Letter of Intent has been issued to WCT by the government on 15 May 2009, and WCT has come up with a recommendation which includes "To gazette kaiduan catchment as water catchment reserve IMMEDIATELY" ...
